On the occasion of the centenary of Calvino’s birth, the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia remembers the beloved writer, who met Roccamare in 1972 and fell in love with it.
He came to know this area of the Maremma thanks to his youthful friendship with the writer Pietro Citati, who advised his friend to visit this wonderful land as a cradle of serenity and inspiration.

The sea, the beaches, the vegetation, the contemplative silence and the sounds of nature were the subject and companion of the writer’s literary life, and he masterfully included them in his works on several occasions.

It was a mutual love that between Castiglione della Pescaia and Italo Calvino, so much so that today it is that same land, so loved by him, that has the honour of preserving his remains. To commemorate this bond, the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia has
organised numerous occasions to pay homage to the writer in 2023. A series of exhibitions, concerts, literary encounters and… the conferment of posthumous honorary citizenship, probably on 15 October, the day of his birth in 1923, are planned.

An occasion not to be missed, especially for lovers of literature.
