Gulf of Follonica
The Gulf of Follonica is one of the most beautiful areas in Tuscany, in particular Punta Ala, an area in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia where one can spend a relaxing holiday without the hustle and bustle of crowded beaches.
In this area, the coast is rocky and dotted with many bathing establishments such as Casetta Civinini. Casetta Civinini is both an equipped and a free beach of about 6 km that offers many services: a relaxation area and a Bau area where you can bring your four-legged friends, a large car park and a bar where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and aperitifs at sunset.
Cala del Barbiere, is a beautiful cove, not crowded and reachable by car, which you can park a few minutes walk away. We also recommend the small beach at the port of Punta Ala, which can be reached by crossing Marina di Punta Ala; to access it, you need to take a beach umbrella from the bathing establishment that manages it. It is an ideal beach for children because the water slowly rises in depth. The landscape is truly formidable as you can admire the island of Elba in the distance and the Sparviero Islet. For those who love walking, from here it is possible to reach both the castle of Punta Ala and the belvedere located on the promontory via a path.
Finally, we also recommend two beaches to the south of this resort: Cala Tartana and the Spiaggia del Poggettone. These are very exclusive beaches as you need to be organised to reach them, especially Poggettone is a pebble beach and requires appropriate clothing. There are no bathing establishments and they are not very suitable for children because of the type of beach, but you will not be disappointed by the breathtaking landscape that will surely reward any effort made to reach them.
Another area worth visiting is Torre Mozza, located within the Sterpaia nature park and only 3 kilometres from the Gulf of Follonica. The name derives from the 16th-century watchtower overlooking the sea, built to defend against piracy attacks, which were very frequent in that area. It is one of the most suggestive beaches in the Maremma, characterised by sand dunes and pinewoods where it is possible to find both bathing establishments and free beaches. Thanks to the rocks emerging from the sea, a natural swimming pool effect is created that is perfect for children and thanks to which it is possible to observe fish typical of this stretch of sea. For those who prefer to go by car or camper van, there is a large pay car park that will allow you to leave your car very close to the beach.
Also within the La Sterpaia nature park is the Carbonifera beach, which can be reached on foot or by bicycle thanks to the bicycle paths that start from Follonica. While by car or camper van it can be reached thanks to a large car park close to the beach. The golden sandy beaches, the very shallow sea and a pine forest where you can eat thanks to the picnic area inside make it a very family-friendly place. In addition, an inflatable play area is set up during the summer, an irresistible attraction for children and young people. For the older ones, given the characteristics of the place, we recommend trying ‘snorkelling’ to fully admire the beauty of the seabed in this area.
